Development of the trail started in 2003. It has been co-ordinated by a small working group comprised of representatives from Belper Poetry Circle and Poetry People, plus family representation. Additional advice and help from a variety of individuals has been welcomed at the fortnightly meetings.
Areas of focus have been:
Fund-raising - sales of poetry publications, music and poetry events
Funders - the main funders include: Amber Valley Borough Council; Amber Valley Housing; Awards for All (Lottery Funding);Belper Historical Society;Belper Poetry Circle; Belper Town Council; Derbyshire Community Foundation; Derbyshire County Council; Poetry People; The Countryside Agency; The Herbert Strutt Charity.
Copyright - gaining permission has varied in complexity and cost but never been refused
Planning permission - because much of the trail is within the Derwent Valley World Heritage site and there are a number of conservation areas and buildings with 'listed' status, planning permission at times has involved lengthy negotiations. Generally Amber Valley Borough Council has granted permission under 'Advertising consent'
Practicalities - the permission of the owner of the land or property has needed to give their consent. In practice, consent was only refused twice, most people agreeing with us that the poetry enhances the experience of visitors, tourists and local residents alike.
